Soccer ball armadillo

Soccer ball armadillo

Biologist Rodrigo Cerqueira holds an armadillo, named Ana Botafogo in honor of the Brazilian dancer, at the Rio Zoo in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 21, 2014. The three-banded armadillo is in danger of extinction, largely because of deforestation and hunting in its habitat in the shrub lands of northeastern Brazil. Those risks in large part are why the armadillo was chosen as the World Cup mascot. Another is that when it's frightened, it rolls up into a ball small enough to fit into one hand.

Abderazak Tissoukai was near Xingping in China’s Guanxi region when he captured this picture of a cormorant fisherman on the Li River at sunset. “Xingping is definitely one the most beautiful places in China, with its scenic karst landscapes [and] traditional and genuine people,” he writes. An incredible sighting of two leopard cubs playing in a tree waiting for their mother to return from a hunt. Photographer Mark Brodkin nearly fell out of the vehicle trying to get into the best location to capture this fantastic moment.

Rainbow in the Himalayas

Rainbow in the Himalayas

We all were reluctant to rush back down to rainy Khumbu valley after experiencing a stunning sunrise behind the Everest from a hill-top in freezing cold. So, we took more stops than usual on our way back and were gifted by this rare optical phenomena around Nuptse summit- a Circumhorizontal arc (combined with a 22° hallo around the Sun). It took around 5 minutes for it to properly illuminate, but made the sense of spectacular Himalayas even more spectacular!

Eye Sight

Eye Sight

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) captures the intricacies of a fruit fly’s eye. The compound eye is a tightly packed collection of single lenses that gives the fly a gridlike view of the world. Scientists suspect the bristles may help protect the lenses, which have no eyelids, from dirt and debris. Photographer Martin Oeggerli specializes in shooting very small things using an SEM at the School of Life Sciences in Muttenz, Switzerland.

Mauna Kea Magic

Mauna Kea Magic

The Big Island of Hawaii showed me the darkest night sky I've ever seen, especially at nearly 14,000 feet in elevation, near the summit of Mauna Kea. While the naked eye can only see so much, I was blown away by all the detail that the camera was able to pick up such as the airglow, Kilauea Caldera glowing through the fog, and even some zodiacal light looming behind the near setting moon. This panorama is consisted of 22 vertical images at 24mm.

Biting the tail

Biting the tail

In Pacu Jawi (Indonesian cow race), coupled cows run along the muddy field about 20-30 meters long. Each couple is steered by a jockey with his hands on the cows’ tails and his feet on the wooden contraption that bind the cows together. The jockey bites one of the cows’ tip of the tail to make it run, automatically followed by the other one. The jockey often has to bite the tail again in the middle of the race to make the cows go faster.
