18-year-old Keshia Thomas throws herself onto a Ku Klux Klan member to protect him from angry protesters. 1996

In June 1996 a branch of the Ku Klux Klan held a rally in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Thomas was one of several people that attended and protested from an area that had been fenced and set aside for the protesters. A man with a Confederate flag and sporting a SS tattoo was attacked by the protesters until Thomas intervened and shielded the man until police arrived.
